Just behind King's Cross and St Pancras, on the banks of the Regent's Canal, there's a patch of woodland, meadow and pond where you can hear reed warblers instead of trains. Camley Street Natural Park is at 12 Camley Street, London N1C 4PW, and Nonòs Judd Street, our Greek Mediterranean kitchen and bar at 112 Judd Street, London WC1H 9NT, is about 1.2 kilometres away, roughly a 16-minute walk. Here's what to know about the park, and where to eat before or after your visit.

From coal drops to nature reserve

Camley Street Natural Park is an urban nature reserve of about 0.8 hectares (2 acres), next to St Pancras Lock and St Pancras Basin. Until the 17th century the land was part of the Middlesex woodlands. Later it turned industrial: the Regent's Canal was built along its edge, and in the 19th century the site was used for coal drops, first for the canal and then for the railways. By the 1970s it was derelict and had been colonised by nature, and the London Wildlife Trust campaigned to save it from development. In 1984 Camden Council asked the young trust to manage the site, and the park opened in 1985.

It closed for rebuilding in December 2017 and reopened in September 2021, and a new café and learning centre opened in 2022. Today its habitats include a summer meadow, ponds, a reed bed, marshland and woodland, home to birds such as reed buntings, moorhens and coots, and the trust lists visitors such as kingfishers, sparrowhawks and emperor dragonflies. More than 300 kinds of plant have been found there. Background from Wikipedia's Camley Street Natural Park page.

Visiting the park

According to the London Wildlife Trust, the park is open daily, from 10:00 to 16:00 between October and March and from 10:00 to 17:00 between April and September. Admission is free. There's a visitor centre with toilets and the Kingfisher Café, and the area around the visitor centre and the main path to the pond-dipping platform has accessible surfaces, while other paths are woodchip. Only assistance dogs are allowed, and there's no visitor parking. Check the trust's page before you go, as times can change.

The walk

From the park, head south past King's Cross station along King's Boulevard to Euston Road. Cross over into Judd Street and you'll find us at number 112, under the turquoise awning. It's about 1.2 kilometres, around 16 minutes on foot (route from OpenStreetMap). Jane put it nicely: Lovely relaxed atmosphere away from busy traffic. (Jane, Google review)
