Right next to St Pancras station stands one of Europe's biggest biomedical laboratories. The Francis Crick Institute is at 1 Midland Road, London NW1 1AT, and Nonòs Judd Street, our Greek Mediterranean kitchen and bar at 112 Judd Street, London WC1H 9NT, is just across Euston Road, about 580 metres away, roughly an 8-minute walk. Whether you work at the Crick or you're visiting its gallery or a public event, here's what to know, and where to eat.

Named after a DNA pioneer

The institute is named after Francis Crick, the molecular biologist who co-discovered the structure of DNA and shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with James Watson and Maurice Wilkins. It's a partnership between Cancer Research UK, Imperial College London, King's College London, the Medical Research Council, University College London and the Wellcome Trust, with about 1,500 staff, including 1,250 scientists, which makes it the biggest single biomedical laboratory in Europe.

The site on Brill Place was bought in 2008, the first scientists moved in on 1 September 2016, and the Queen officially opened the building on 9 November 2016. It's four interconnected blocks up to eight storeys high, with laboratories designed to bring scientists from different fields together, plus a public exhibition space, an education space and a 450-seat auditorium. Unofficially, it's been called "Sir Paul's Cathedral", after its first director, the Nobel laureate Sir Paul Nurse. Background from Wikipedia's Francis Crick Institute page.

Visiting the Crick

The Crick's gallery is open Wednesday 10:00 to 20:00 and Thursday to Saturday 10:00 to 16:00, and closed Sunday to Tuesday. There's a busy programme of free public events and exhibitions alongside the scientific seminars; coming up are a Crick Crash Course on how the fly helps us understand health and disease on 21 October, and Sip of Science on 22 October. Check the Crick's what's on page and visit page before you go, as times can change.

The walk

From the Crick's entrance, head south down Midland Road, between St Pancras station and the British Library, to Euston Road. Cross over and walk straight into Judd Street, and you'll find us at number 112 under the turquoise awning. It's about 580 metres, around 8 minutes on foot (route from OpenStreetMap).
