What is Mythos? Greek lager at Nonòs Judd Street

Order a beer in a Greek taverna and there's a good chance you'll be handed a Mythos. It's on our list at Nonòs Judd Street, our Greek Mediterranean kitchen and bar at 112 Judd Street, London WC1H 9NT, five minutes' walk from King's Cross St Pancras. Here's a short guide to the beer and what to eat with it.

A young Greek lager

Mythos (Μύθος) means "myth". It's a light, straw-coloured lager with an alcohol content of 5%, and it's younger than you might think: it was launched in 1997.

The story starts in 1992, when the Greek Boutari Group bought the local distributor of the German beer Henninger. The company was renamed Northern Greece Brewery in 1994, as part of a plan to build a genuinely Greek beer brand, and Mythos was the result. It became so central to the business that the company renamed itself Mythos Brewery in 2001. Since 2008 it has been part of the Carlsberg Group, and since 2015 Mythos has been brewed by Olympic Brewery. It's widely available across Greece and exported to many countries. Wikipedia's Mythos page has the full history.

Mythos at Nonòs

On our drinks and bar menu, Mythos comes in two sizes: a 330ml bottle and a 500ml. If you'd like something else, the beer and cider list also has Peroni, London Pride ale, Peroni 0% and Magnum cider. For something stronger, ouzo is on our shot selection; read how to drink ouzo first.

What to eat with it

A crisp lager loves salt, char and anything fried. Our favourites from the à la carte menu:

  • Kalamari: crispy fried baby squid with lemon and a side dip.
  • Loukaniko Karditsas: chargrilled Greek pork sausage with pitta and a chilli and garlic sauce. See our post on loukaniko.
  • Halloumi Fries or Greek Feta Fries from the sides.
  • Chicken, Lamb or Pork Skewers (GF), served with fries and salad.
  • The Mixed Grill Feast, for one or two: chicken skewer, lamb chops, beef kofta and loukaniko, with pitta, Greek salad, fries and tzatziki.

The grill gets good reviews. Adam wrote that The chicken skewers were incredible: juicy, perfectly seasoned (Adam S., Google review), and M C D said simply: The grilled souvlaki was delicious. (M C D, Google review) Be warned about portion size, though. Thomas tried the mixed grill for one and found the amount of food was enough for 3 person (Thomas K., Google review). Our post on the Greek grill at Nonòs has more.

Weekday lunch

Between 12 and 5pm, Monday to Thursday, our Souvlaki Wraps come with chicken, pork or halloumi: pitta filled with fries, house sauce, tomatoes and red onion. A wrap and a cold Mythos is a very Greek lunch. Our post on souvlaki wraps for weekday lunch has the details.

“Great food and service from Aron and Arlind. Highly recommend, lovely atmosphere.”
