Loukaniko is the word you'll see for sausage on a Greek menu, and it's one of the best things to come off a Greek grill. You'll find it twice on our menu at Nonòs Judd Street, our Greek Mediterranean kitchen and bar at 112 Judd Street, London WC1H 9NT, five minutes' walk from King's Cross St Pancras: as a mezze dish of its own, and as part of our Mixed Grill Feast.

What loukaniko is

Loukaniko (λουκάνικο) is a Greek sausage made from pork or lamb. It's typically flavoured with orange peel, fennel seed and other dried herbs and seeds, and it's sometimes smoked. Some versions add greens, especially leeks. In Greece it's often served as a mezze, sliced and fried, sometimes alongside saganaki.

The name is old. It comes from lucanica, a sausage from ancient Roman cooking named after Lucania in southern Italy, and it has been used in Greece since at least the 4th century. You can read more on Wikipedia's loukaniko page.

Loukaniko Karditsas

On our à la carte menu, under Mezze and Starters, you'll find Loukaniko Karditsas: a traditional Greek chargrilled pork sausage, served with pitta bread and a side of chilli and garlic sauce. The name refers to Karditsa, a city in western Thessaly in mainland Greece.

Recipes for loukaniko vary from region to region and maker to maker, so if you'd like to know more about the flavours in ours, just ask your server.

In the Mixed Grill Feast

If you can't choose between meats, the Mixed Grill Feast has a portion each of chicken skewer, lamb chops, beef kofta and loukaniko pork sausage, served with pitta bread, Greek salad, fries and tzatziki. It comes in a version for two and one for one person.

Guests rate it. J wrote: It's been a while since a mixed grill impressed me as much as this one. (J, Google review) Mikey's advice was simple: I recommend the mixed grill feast. (Mikey S., Google review) Be warned that it's generous. Thomas ordered the one-person platter and found the amount of food was enough for 3 person (Thomas K., Google review). Our post on souvlaki, lamb chops and the Mixed Grill Feast has more on the grill.

Building a mezze around it

Loukaniko works well as one of several small plates. Try it with:

  • Prawn Saganaki (GF): prawns in a spicy tomato and garlic sauce with ouzo, topped with feta.
  • Tyrokafteri (V, GF), our spicy feta and red pepper dip.
  • Greek Olives (V, VG, GF), marinated in herbs and extra virgin olive oil.
  • Greek Flatbread or Greek Feta Fries from the sides.

Our guide to building a mezze table has more ideas.

A drink with it

A cold Mythos is the obvious choice, in a 330ml bottle or a 500ml. Ouzo is on our shot selection too. If you've never tried it, read how to drink ouzo first.
