Spicy Greek food at Nonòs Judd Street: tyrokafteri, saganaki and more

A plate of seafood linguine with prawns and mussels at Nonòs

Greek cooking isn't usually thought of as fiery. It's more about lemon, oregano, olive oil and the grill. But there are a few dishes on our menu with real warmth, and if you like a bit of heat, they're worth knowing about. Nonòs Judd Street is our Greek Mediterranean kitchen and bar at 112 Judd Street, London WC1H 9NT, five minutes' walk from King's Cross St Pancras.

Tyrokafteri, the spicy dip

Tyrokafteri (V, GF) is a traditional Greek dip of spicy feta, red pepper and paprika. The name roughly means "hot cheese". Expect the saltiness of feta with the warmth of red pepper and paprika, and plenty of pitta to scoop it up. It also comes as part of Nonòs' Meze for two, alongside hummus, tzatziki, Greek salad, olives and pitta, so you can try it next to the cooler dips. For more on all four dips, see our guide to Greek dips.

Mezze with heat

  • Prawn saganaki (GF): prawns in a spicy tomato and garlic sauce with ouzo, topped with crumbled feta and served with pitta.
  • Oven roasted feta cheese: feta baked with onion, tomatoes, peppers and spicy pepper, topped with olive oil and oregano, with pitta.
  • Stuffed oven roasted mushroom: a mushroom filled with tyrokafteri, spinach and cheddar, with pitta.
  • Loukaniko Karditsas: a traditional Greek chargrilled pork sausage, served with pitta and a side of chilli and garlic sauce.

Tom built a lunch out of small plates: We ordered several small plates...prawn saganaki, beetroot and feta salad and gigantes beans (Tom L., Google review)

A main with chilli

Our seafood linguine is lightly flavoured with white wine, cherry tomatoes, baby spinach, parsley and chilli. From the grill, the skewers are about seasoning rather than spice. V Y found the souvlaki very tender and well spiced (V Y, Google review).

Cooling it down

Greek food comes with its own fire extinguishers. A bowl of tzatziki (Greek yoghurt with cucumber, garlic and olive oil), a Greek salad, or Greek yoghurt with honey and mixed nuts for dessert will all calm things down.

A drink with a kick

From the bar, the Smoky Picante is mezcal tequila, fresh lime, our house spicy syrup and coriander. If you'd rather a beer, there's Greek Mythos, or Peroni 0% if you're not drinking.

“Great food, service and vibe”
