Few cheeses have as many fans as halloumi. It's salty, it squeaks, and it can go on the grill without melting into a puddle. At Nonòs Judd Street, our Greek Mediterranean kitchen and bar at 112 Judd Street, London WC1H 9NT, it turns up all over the menu, from breakfast to dinner. Here's where to find it.
What makes halloumi different
Halloumi comes from Cyprus. It's traditionally made from a mix of goat's and sheep's milk, though many modern versions also use cow's milk. Its high melting point means it can be fried or grilled until golden while keeping its shape, which is why it works so well as a vegetarian alternative to meat. Wikipedia's halloumi page has more on its history.
At breakfast
Breakfast runs from 8:30 to 12:00 every day. Our breakfast menu has:
- Hash Benedict with halloumi: two poached free-range eggs and hollandaise on hash browns. You can also choose smoked salmon or cured ham.
- Vegetarian Breakfast (V): two poached eggs, halloumi, avocado, beans, roasted plum tomatoes and hash brown, with sourdough.
- Add-on: grilled halloumi can be added to any breakfast.
On the side
From noon, two sides are worth ordering for the table: Grilled Halloumi and Halloumi Fries. They go well with a round of mezze, like hummus, tzatziki and tyrokafteri, or with a cold Mythos. Our guide to building a mezze table has more ideas.
In a wrap at lunchtime
Our Souvlaki Wraps come with chicken, pork or halloumi: pitta filled with fries, house sauce, tomatoes and red onion. They're served Monday to Thursday, 12 to 5pm. Our post on souvlaki wraps for weekday lunch has more.
In a burger
- Nonòs Lamb Burger: grilled lamb with lettuce, tomatoes, tzatziki and grilled halloumi, served with fries.
- Nonòs Vegetarian Burger (V): chargrilled mushroom, roasted peppers, onion, tomatoes, lettuce and grilled halloumi in a toasted bun, with fries. It can be made vegan.
On a salad
Grilled halloumi can be added to any of our salads, including the Greek salad and the Caesar, for £3.50.

Ezio came for a quick lunch and found the portions generous. He also wrote: Personally, I had never tasted such a delicious hummus before.
(Ezio S., Google review) That's one more reason to order a dip alongside your halloumi fries.
