Lamb chops at Nonòs: lemon, oregano and the Greek grill

Grilled plates and white wine at Nonòs Judd Street for lamb chops

Some Greek tables start with mezze and never leave the dips. Others come for one plate: lamb chops dressed with lemon, oil and oregano, served with Greek salad, fries and pitta. At Nonòs Judd Street — 112 Judd Street, London WC1H 9NT — that is how the chop lands on the menu, and it is the focus of this post. Distinct from a full Mixed Grill Feast or a skewer-only order, the lamb chops are a complete main for one hungry diner or a shareable centrepiece for two.

How we serve the chops

On the menus page, lamb chops come with a lemon, oil and oregano dressing, plus Greek salad, fries and pitta. That is the classic Greek grill plate: sharp citrus, herb, char, and the sides you actually want to mop the juices with. Danny's first-visit order still matches what many tables do: he had the spinach and feta filo parcels for starter, and the lamb chops and Greek salad for mains (Danny T., Google review).

Tina's rule of thumb covers anything off our grill: The food, especially anything off the grill, is so flavourful and fresh and the portions are generous. (Tina, Google review). M. C. D. singled out the chips: Really pleasantly surprised with the crispy homemade freshly cut chips. (M. C. D., Google review) — useful when the fries share the plate with the chops.

Build the rest of the table around them

Before the chops arrive, order mezze: hummus, tzatziki, tyrokafteri, filo triangles, baked feta pastry with honey and sesame, or Nonòs' Meze for 2. Ezio's hummus line still makes the kitchen smile: Personally, I had never tasted such a delicious hummus before. (Ezio S., Google review). If two of you want more meat after the chops, add a chicken skewer rather than jumping straight to the Mixed Grill Feast — keep the focus on the lemon–oregano plate.

“It was almost like you weren't in the centre of London, but a traditional Greek Taverna.”

Jane liked seeing the kitchen work: Compact open kitchen which looked very clean and well run. (Jane D., Google review). Watching the grill while you finish the mezze is part of the ritual at Judd Street.

What to drink with lamb chops

A Greek red — Agiorgitiko & Syrah Nemea or Makedonikos red — sits naturally with lamb; a crisp white works if the table prefers lighter pours. Katie noted Very friendly service, generous pours of wine (Katie H., Google review). Mythos beer, a Negroni or an Old Fashioned from the cocktail list also pair if wine is not the mood. Tom L. made an afternoon of it: Delicious greek wine and a couple of cocktails plus fantastic service. (Tom L., Google review).
